Your mileage may vary a tad, depending on what operating system you're using, but it should be generally the same -- for the most part. ;)

Go to:

Tools > Account Settings > Add Account (lower left-hand corner.)

On the New Account Setup Screen

  • Choose POP or IMAP as your account type (see here for an explanation of the difference between the two).
  • Incoming Server: www.domain.com (replacing domain.com with your actual domain.)
  • UNCHECK Global Inbox: if you want your mail to have its own inbox, best to uncheck this. Helps keep things organized! :)

Click Continue

On the Usernames page

  • Incoming Username: you@domain.com -- your FULL email address. Not just 'you' (or equivalent)
  • Outgoing Username: If you have an existing account set up in Thunderbird already, it will tell you it's going to use your existing username. You can fix this later.

If not, enter: you@domain.com -- your FULL email address. Not just the 'you' (or equivalent)

On the Account Name Page

Enter whatever you like here, to help you differentiate this account from any others.

To Change SMTP Server

Thunderbird has a quirk where, if you've already got an SMTP server assigned to another address, it doesn't let you type in a new one. So:

  • Go to account settings.
  • At the bottom of the left pane (you may need to scroll down), click on "Outgoing Server (SMTP)".
  • Click the "Add..." button.
  • Insert the SMTP server information that you want, and click the "OK" button.

To use this newly added SMTP server for an account's default identity:

  • In account settings, in the left pane, click on the account name whose default identity you want to change.
  • At the bottom of the "Default Identity" panel, choose the SMTP server you want to use from the "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" pulldown list.

To use this newly added SMTP server for any other identity:

  • In account settings, in the left pane, click on the account name whose identities you want to change.
  • Press the Manage Identities... button.
  • Select the identity that you want to change, and press the Edit... button.
  • Choose the SMTP server you want to use from the "Outgoing Server (SMTP)" pulldown list.
