Where to get Images

With our new Theme Editor, it's quite easy to replace our default banners/background for our templates. Getting appropriate and interesting images to replace what we provide by default can be a challenge, especially if you don't have many original photos to work with.

Sure, you can snag images you find from Google Searches -- but unless you get proper permission to use those photos, you'd basically be stealing another artist's work. Think of having all your music from stolen from your hosted website; not so cool, right?

So, to address this quandary, the good folks at Hostbaby made a blog post that discusses where best to get these images.

In a nutshell, you'll want to make sure you get the image from a publicly available, and were meant for public consumption! Some of those images will not require attributing to the original artist (Public Domain), while some will require attribution in some way.

How best to attribute to the artist

There a couple of common ways of accomplishing this.

  1. To place a "watermark" on the image. This literally means using an image editor, like paint.net or Gimp to write the artist's name, and the year it was made, somewhere visible on the image itself.
  2. To make a link on your website to the source of the image. You can make use of the Links Page if you're using the Wizard, or you can simply create a link to their site somewhere on your site -- like in a text widget or somewhere visible on your site.
